- Abstract
Objective: the aim of this study was to show an overview of the use of cellulose in the food packaging industry. Design/methodology/approach: a search was made through scientific publications in different scientific and academic databases such as: Scopus, ISI web of knowdledge, Google Scholar, among others. Results: a wide variety of information about cellulose was found, searching for "cellulose food packaging" in the Scopus database, there were around 900 papers, 177 of the year 2018 and 45 jobs so far in 2019; among them works, there are topics on improving the characteristics of paper, using cellulose derivatives, mixtures with other materials or biomaterials, chemical modifications and even the use of their nanoforms and elaboration of bionanocomposites; even more, conjugating some of these methods, the functionalization of the biopolymer is obtained, giving it new characteristics. Study limitations/implications: the challenge of cellulosic materials is to obtain mechanical properties, barrier properties, etc. as those that petroleum-derived polymers provide food packaging. Findings/conclusions: according to literature, cellulose has been used in the packaging industry since ancient times; nowadays, we are trying to reach the characteristics of petroleum derived polymers and without doubt improve these characteristics by offering packaging that fulfills its function and presents an added value, such as being antimicrobial and/or antioxidant.
