Patch testing with degradation products of Kathon® CG.

- Abstract
The preservative Kathon CG consists of 2 active ingredients, various salts, and water. Both active ingredients, which are methylisothiazolinones, and a chemically-related dichlorinated methylisothiazolinones, have been shown to be sensitizers in humans and guinea pigs. It is not known whether these sensitizers are haptens or require further metabolization within the skin to become haptens. The methylisothiazolinones are degraded to N-methylmalonamic acid, malonamic acid, and malonic acid in the environment. Theoretically, the formation of these or similar compounds within the skin cannot be excluded, so the authors investigated whether these compounds might be the haptens.
