- Abstract
The article focuses on the work of John Alexander, a doctor of medicine, who during World War I observed the devastation caused by pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), which inspired him to study under doctor Léon Bérard in France, where he learned about thoracoplasty, phrenicotomy, and pneumolysis as a therapeutic approach to TB. It states that he developed a novel surgical method that significantly lowered the mortality rate related to paravertebral thoracoplasty for tuberculosis.
