- Title
Massage During Last Weeks of Pregnancy Reduces Episiotomies During Delivery.
- Authors
Kuehn, Bridget M.
- Abstract
This article discusses the effectiveness of massage during pregnancy. It presents a study conducted on pregnant women in their third trimester using manual perineal massage. The study found that using perineal massage during the final weeks of pregnancy reduced the womens' risk of episiotomy during delivery. Researchers believe that the massage may help stretch the muscles in the lower genital tract, and may encourage women to push longer during pregnancy, thus avoiding damage to the perineum. The article also discusses the importance of encouraging natural birthing reflexes to provide a healthy birth.
