- Abstract
The big success of farming the kelp Saccharina japonica in China is partly due to the transplantation of this cold water species to the subtropical Fujian province since the 1950s. After more than 70 year's development, Fujian province has steadily grown into the largest kelp production province in China occupying 50% of the total annual national production, surpassing all the northern provinces. Among all the others, use of cultivars in this province contributes significantly to this achievement. In this investigation we have analyzed nine major local cultivars in their genetic structures, chemical component contents (fucose, alginate, mannitol and iodine) and morphological characters (length, width, blade thickness and fresh weight). Results revealed that, (1) there were no significant differences in evaluated morphological characters; (2) based on SSR (simple sequence repeat) analyses, the boundaries among some of the local cultivars are not clear; (3) significant differences were found in the four evaluated chemical component contents among cultivars; (4) genetic exchange between the northern and southern cultivars were rare. In general, there exists a certain degree of homogenization in some of the local cultivars. Sharing of parental sporophyte for seedling production among hatcheries is highly possible.
