- Abstract
Craving is an intense and continuous urge to consume again psychotropic drugs during its abstinence, with a compulsive seeking behavior and a new period of substance abuse. Its nature is an acute , undefeatable-irresistible need and goes beyond a voluntary controllable wish or desire. Reference is made to neurochemical mechanisms associated with craving , the induced by abstinence symptoms (anxiety, depression, etc.) and the way its conditioned processes associated drug effects with context stimulus and memory reinforcement, produced by the effects of drug dependence based on the reward system. Factors involved in relapse are intense craving which drives to reiterated consumption, avoidance of aversive conditions, loss of self monitoring in favor of abstinence, and depressive feelings. Conclusions point to work with craving and addictive pathology by including education, high quiality assistance, clinical development and therapeutic research, tailored made treatment interventions, and development of integral programs which encourage therapeutic motivation during rehabilitation.
