- Title
The Assimilation of German Immigrants into a Pennsylvania German Township, 1840-1900.
- Authors
HUESTON, ROBERT F.
- Abstract
The article assesses the cultural adaptation of German speaking immigrants who settled in Nockamixon Township, a rural Pennsylvania Dutch township of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, from 1840 to 1900. The process is examined through the lens of modern assimilation theory. It is noted that immigrants successfully blended into a predominantly "Pennsylvania Dutch" society which shared many customs, values, and religious traditions. Resistance to the Anglo-conformity model in favor of cultural pluralism by German speaking populations in the area is described. The work skills and employment patterns of male Nockamixon Germans are analyzed. Trends in property ownership are also examined.
