- Title
Breaking the Code: Biotechnology as Kabbalah in Alien Resurrection and Species.
- Authors
Greenbaum, Andrea
- Abstract
The article discusses the role of biotechnology in the films "Alien Resurrection" and "Species" in reconstructing the Kabbalic golem legend of creating life. The background of the golem figure is provided as well as how literature has treated the legend. It explains the similarities that are found in the golem legend and in the monsters of the two films. The films show how humanity's attempt to create life goes awry in that what is created is a deadly monster. The author suggests that the fascination for the golem legend is due to narcissism in that God created humanity in his image and humans, through biotechnology, are trying to create life in their image.
