- Abstract
Neodymium oxide is an excellent colorant and additive with a wide range of application prospects. However, due to the obvious thermal gradient during the traditional calcination process, it is impossible to obtain particles with uniform size and morphology. A new method for preparing neodymium oxide by microwave heating of neodymium oxalate is thus proposed herein. Thermogravimetry difference scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser particle size analysis, etc. were applied to investigate the changes of phase, morphology, and particle size of neodymium oxalate in the microwave field. The results revealed that neodymium oxide with complete crystal form, median diameter D50 between 3.06 μm and 4.3 μm, and uniform ellipsoid morphology could be obtained by microwave heating at 900 °C for 2 h with a heating rate of 20 °C/min, thus confirming the feasibility of microwave heating for industrial production of rare-earth oxides.
