- Title
A Millstone Hanged About His Neck?: George W. Truett, Anti-Catholicism, and Baptist Conceptions of Religious Liberty.
- Authors
Holcomb, J. David
- Abstract
The article discusses the religious and political views of the early 20th-century Baptist leader George W. Truett, particularly regarding the Catholic Church and religious liberty. Discussion is given outlining the distinct anti-Catholic tone which is present within his public discourses and questions are raised evaluating whether Catholicism was simply a convenient rhetorical counter-example or the core basis of his views regarding church and state relations. An overview is given to Truett's cultural, intellectual and theological background during the late 19th- and early 20th-centuries and it is suggested that Truett's views are in line with the traditional intellectual approach of Baptist thought.
