- Title
Signs of Difference: Language and Ideology in Social Life.
- Authors
Webster, Anthony K.
- Abstract
It was, then, with a great deal of excitement that I greeted Gal and Irvine's I Signs of Difference: Language and Ideology in Social Life i . The book both provoked in me a sense of nostalgia for a tradition that Gal and Irvine helped to create and also optimism for the new conversations it will prompt. I say this because I think it good to remember that in 1997 - when I went to PCL to find Gal and Irvine's article - Peircian semiotics was not yet the dominant theoretical perspective in linguistic anthropology.
