- Abstract
The article discusses the role of conservation biologists in public policy decisions. Are such scientists to be advocates of policy or providers of information based on research? The authors conclude that conservation biologists must be perceived as neutral in the conduct and communication of their science. The authors reviewed scientific journals for evidence of policy advocacy and surveyed conservation biologists. The authors conclude that scientists and professional societies should strive to conduct policy-relevant science, report it in value-neutral language, and state the policy implications of the findings to decision makers.
