- Title
Burckhardt redivivus: renaissance pedagogy as self-formation.
- Authors
Burchell, David
- Abstract
In the nineteenth century historians made great claims for the historical significance of the Renaissance humanistic curriculum, and its rhetorical component in particular, as a means for the creation of a special kind of social type, the spiritual individual. Recent scholarship in Renaissance studies, on the other hand, has shown a diminishing interest in the ethical ambitions of the humanistic curriculum. Jacob Burckhardt's image of Renaissance culture as the crucible of a distinctive modern mode of personal identity, this "spiritual individualism," formed the basis of Renaissance scholarship for the better part of a century.
