- Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The life expectancy for newborns (LEN) is the years that on the average it would expect to live a person if during his life it would be subject to conditions of mortality for age observed in the period of study. At Chile, during 2000-2005 is 75.96 years for both sex. OBJECTIVE: Comparing patients survival extracted for cancer of rectum with and without LEN accomplish. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A cross sectional, non probabilistic sample by convenience study was carried away. 156 patients studied with rectal adenocarcinoma extracted between 1996-2006. Two groups become established: Group 1 (24), patients with LEN accomplished; Group 2 (132), not accomplished. Study of survival for Kaplan-Meier method and comparison of curves with Test Log-Rank. RESULTS: The characteristics of group 1 and 2 are: Sex (M/F) 6/18, 66/66 (p=0,024); average age 80±5.6, 60±11.9 (p<0.0001); stage (I/II/III/IV); 1/13/10/0, 25/39/59/9 (pII=0.019); location of tumor (upper third, medium, inferior) 6/9/9, 26/30/76; celular differentation (I/II/ III) 2/20/2, 25/85/22; Serous implicated 7, 34 (NS); permeation lymphovascular (+) 9, 35 (NS); lymphnode compromise (+) 15, 58 (NS); neoadyuvant 10, 89 (p=0,016); adyuvant 5, 92 (p<0,0006), low anterior resection 15, 71 (NS), abdominoperineal resection 7, 42 (NS); postoperative complications 10, 42 (NS); resection R0 23, 115 (NS). Global survival to 5 years term, group 1 34.5% (n=8); group 2, 49.8% (n=66) (NS). DISCUSSION: Evidence exists statistically significant to establish that there is no difference as to survival between both groups, for what surgery with curative intention in patients with cancer of rectum and LEN accomplish, in our experience, it's justified.
