- Abstract
The article focuses on the effectiveness of two vaccines for poliomyelitis. It defines poliomyelitis as an acute viral infectious disease caused by poliovirus. It states oral polio vaccine (OPV) and inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) have eliminated poliomyelitis from most countries and reduced the cases of poliomyelitis from 350,000 cases in 1988 to just 1300 cases in 2007. The article compares OPV and IPV based on mode of administration, gastrointestinal tract immunity and requirements for transport and storage.
