- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Neonatal lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease caused by the transplacental passage of autoantibodies anti-Ro/SSA or anti-La/SSB into the fetal circulation. It is a rare entity and clinical manifestations are diverse, the most common are cutaneous and cardiac ones. CLINICAL CASE: A 2-month-old female patient whose mother was diagnosed with gestational syphilis, which led to suspicion of congenital syphilis in the newborn, but in whom the clinical and paraclinical diagnosis of neonatal lupus erythematosus was finally established. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to have in mind that, although neonatal lupus erythematosus is a little frequent disease, it is the most frequent immunomediated illness in the newborn.
