- Abstract
Objective: According to current statistical data, drug overdose is the most common method of suicide attempt with an average of 90% in our country. This study consists of data on suicide attempt cases in Emergency Department of Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty with overdose medication. Our aim was to evaluate the spatial information with gender, age, application time, sky view by using geographic information system (GIS) technology. Material and Methods: The data of the cases included in the evaluation were analyzed both by statistically and creating data sets in Microsoft Office Excel program. The created data sets were saved as a separate file in Excel with different variations depending on the determined criteria, and the criteria were stored separately and evaluated with GIS support. Results: In this study, data belongs to 144 patients in total and the characteristics of the cases were evaluated with concentric same period and other centered studies in the past period. The most critical information obtained is that the number of suicide attempts doubled in 2009, and the increase continued in 2010. Especially in 2009, it is seen that male cases increased critically and to the first rank, especially in districts such as Kâğıthane, Büyükçekmece and Küçükçekmece, and this number decreased similarly to 2008 in the follow-up. Conclusion: It is seen that the findings observed with the information obtained is compatible with the studies cover the relation of unemployment and commercial failures with suicide. The continuation of such projects and the continuity of these data will contribute to the understanding of their spatial distribution and will be effective in the planning, implementation and evaluation of suicide prevention activities.
