- Abstract
Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a frequently preferred procedure for long-term nutrition in stroke patients with impaired consciousness and impaired swallowing functions in the intensive care unit. Although PEG is generally a safe procedure, the complications and their frequency cannot be neglected. "Gastric pneumatosis" is defined as the presence of air in the stomach wall, a rare radiological finding that is mostly diagnosed by computed tomography. It is seen in 2 different conditions with different clinical presentations, prognoses and treatment approaches: "Gastric emphysema" and "emphysematous gastritis." Gastric emphysema is a rare manifestation and may occur as a result of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy-related disruption of gastric wall integrity. In this case report, the clinical findings of iatrogenic gastric emphysema and the conservative treatment approach followed in a case who underwent PEG for long-term enteral nutrition after stroke will be discussed.
