- Abstract
A careful evaluation of Nigeria's film industry, Nollywood, reveals a tilted production of movies about domestic life, referred to as "true-lifestories," making its filmmaking realistic. Less attention is paid to historical and other critical films. This study investigated the reason for the continued regeneration and overconcentration on domestic issues rather than historical antecedents, with the objective of drawing the attention of indigenous filmmakers towards the production of the historical genre of film from Africa's historical pool for the entertainment and education of the African audience, as well as keeping records for posterity. Using historical research approach, Nollywood's past and present were examined. The study identified government's policies and other factors as the root causes of the dearth of the historical genre. The study proposed a feasible path. The paper concluded that African/Nigerian filmmakers need to engage themselves with African history and produce films based on these documented events, like their foreign counterparts.
