- Abstract
The article reports on the degradation of aromatic and asphaltenic fractions by Serratia liquefasciens and Bacillus. Oil extraction and processing became a national priority for Mexican government however not taking into account the negative impact these processes have on the environment. Oil spills and oil wastes extracted during that time, remain on the soils especially around oil fields. In this study, a microbial mixed culture from a highly polluted soil was obtained by enrichment culture, using the recalcitrant aromatic and asphaltenic fractions as sole carbon sources. The culture growing capability on these former mentioned fractions was evaluated along with its degradation abilities. The existence of specific micro flora involved in the degradation of each fraction was studied.
