- Abstract
Carnival is a popular Brazilian party that attracts thousands of tourists annually. Faced with the attempt of the municipal public power and actors involved in restoring the carnival culture of Belo Horizonte and transforming it into a tourist event, in addition to promoting the creative economy in the capital, this work aimed to investigate the influence of the carnival industry in the economy of Belo Horizonte, with the specific objectives of identifying the evolution of the revenue of the event in the period from 2015 to 2017 and analyzing its effect on the creative economy of the capital of Minas Gerais. For that, the following question was established: What's the influence of carnival as a creative economy in the economy of Belo Horizonte? This article presents a bibliographical research, of qualitative nature and descriptive character. The data were collected from research on electronic sites of organs related to the creative economy. Studies show that the creative industry is seen as a potential factor for the local and regional socioeconomic development in the world, being a generator of jobs and wealth, besides contributing considerably to the expansion of several countries. The carnival, as cultural and tourist attraction, presents itself as a strong event and responsible for raising the cultural and creative Gross Domestic Products of many states and municipalities. In 2016, the carnival of Belo Horizonte generated revenues of around $54.7 million. In 2017, revenue reached $348 million, more than six times higher than the previous year, which leads to the conclusion that the event has a positive and significant impact on the local economy. But is this generated economy really reaching all the actors involved in this creative economy movement or is it concentrated in public power? What appreciation is offered to the actors who promote carnival art and culture?.
