- Authors

- Abstract
This paper will present the evidence for physical abuse and child neglect as contributors to disability statistics in the United States and worldwide. We will explore the epidemiology, mechanism, and overall costs of abuse-related sequelae. The injury best studied in the context of pervasive disability is abusive head trauma (AHT), but we will also explore the limited research around other forms of physical abuse as etiologies for short- and long-term disability. In addition, we will explore the effects of child neglect in the form of failure to thrive and how this impairs intellectual development and social functioning.
