- Abstract
The article discusses a study on the effect of financial aid on collegiate success as measured by a student's first-year grade point average. The results of a natural experiment at University of Oregon (UO) in the early 2000s indicated that the relationship between financial aid and grade point average (GPA) exists for the subsamples of low-income students and students of color and provided evidence that financial aid can encourage success and retention. It notes a positive relationship between aid and academic success where students are given more time to devote to academics rather than having to work. It indicates a connection between financial aid and first-year academic success and suggests further inquiry into what student behaviors are influenced by scholarship renewal requirements.
