Inventories and Sales: A Cross Section Study.
- Authors
Manes, R. P.; Samuels, J. M.; Smyth, D. J.
- Abstract
The article reports on the detection of economies of scale and inventory management in the annual reports of business enterprises. Particular focus is paid to the U.S. industries of drugs, chemicals, and steel with data gathered over a ten year period starting in 1956. The economic theory rubrics used in the research are macroeconomics and microeconomics. There is a multiplier effect in investments which is associated with the changes in inventories in business cycles. Microeconomists believe that inventories vary less than proportionately with sales due to optimal inventory holding rules that firms apply.
