- Abstract
This research explores the problem of solid waste and its recycling of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in order to know the factors that contribute to its proliferation and how it affects the lives of its residents, the activity of the establishments, as well as tourism, in the perception of those who make life in the area. The qualitative methodology was based on Grounded Theory, using focus groups and semi-structured interviews with residents and business owners, in addition to participant observation. The results indicate that litter is a common problem affecting both residents' quality of life and tourism. Residents blame businesses, the lack of proper containers, the presence of homeless people, the irregularity of garbage collection and the lack of citizen awareness about garbage and recycling. It is concluded that education is seen by the people who make life in the Colonial City as a key instrument to address these problems. This is the first anthropological-sociological study on the problems related to the management and disposal of solid waste in the Colonial City.
