- Abstract
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome is a life-threatening neurological disorder most often caused by an adverse reaction to neuroleptic or antipsychotic drugs. It is characterized by central neurotransmitter imbalance. The syndrome is thought to be caused by Dopaminergic block. Pooled data suggests the incidence of NMS is between 0.2%-3.20%. The mortality rate is very high at 55%, but may be reduced significantly by early recognition and improved management. We present this case as an example of the difficulty in diagnosing NMS.
