- Abstract
In 1986, the nuclear disaster in the Chernobyl plant caused a huge international tension. Recovering in the social imagination the historical fear that the atomic energy could cause the destruction of the planet, the event awoke a series of discourses that attribute a mythical meaning to the catastrophe. To investigate the occurrence of these mythologies, the research delimited the analysis and examined a group of images found in the documentaries The Battle of Chernobyl (2006) and Inside Chernobyl (2012). We performed analysis of the films and interpreted the symbolic images from the perspective of archetypes and mythology studies. We notice that the archetypal images of heaven and hell as well as the representations of the monster, the sacred hero, the demonic villain and the old and wise man were discursive resources widely used to attribute a mythological connotation to the narratives.
