It ain't what you do (it's the way that you do it): modulating the host response in sepsis.

- Abstract
This article explores the challenges in developing effective interventions for sepsis, a life-threatening condition caused by an abnormal immune response to infection. Despite numerous clinical trials, there is currently no proven medication for sepsis. The authors argue that a new approach is needed, focusing on predictive biomarkers and trial enrichment rather than prognosis. They propose studying host genetics and deep phenotyping to identify different types of sepsis and develop targeted treatments. The article also suggests learning from other diseases like COVID-19 and non-infectious inflammatory conditions to find commonalities and potential therapies. The concept of "treatable traits" is introduced, which are specific features that can be targeted with interventions to improve outcomes. The TRAITS adaptive platform trial is mentioned as an example of this approach in critical care. Overall, the article emphasizes the importance of a fresh perspective in understanding and treating sepsis. It highlights the significance of early recognition, intervention, and a multidisciplinary approach to care. The article provides factual information for library patrons researching sepsis and does not express personal opinions or judgments.
