- Abstract
Language acculturation is a complex process subject to linguistic and sociolinguistic constraints. In order to speak a new variety correctly, immigrants must acquire new linguistic items and learn how to use them. When considering the variety of Spanish spoken by Italian immigrants in Montevideo, we find that they display different strategies according to the characteristics of the linguistic items considered (the variants of the Spanish phonemes /X/, /ž/ and /s/). We find also that these speakers try to control specificcally those items that have clear social information, while other items whose social information is not clear or irrelevant are acquired later (or even never acquired). The performance of the speakers considered here varies according to their social level and length of residence.
