- Abstract
Delayed neurological deterioration from cerebral vasospasm can be a serious complication of an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Neuroscience nurses are frontline practitioners involved in monitoring for clinical changes suggesting vasospasm. Prompt detection and intervention are crucial to preventing cerebral ischemia and infarction. To date, the pathogenesis of cerebral vasospasm is not definitively understood. However, recent advances have led to the development of new forms of therapies. The aim of this presentation is to review the current established treatments for vasospasm, in addition to newer experimental treatments undergoing clinical trials. With increasing use of new therapies in the clinical setting, neuroscience nurses must be aware of the mechanisms of action and possible complications.
