- Abstract
This article discusses the risk of HIV transmission in serodiscordant heterosexual partners who are receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART). The "Undetectable equals Untransmittable (U = U)" campaign suggests that individuals with an undetectable viral load have a significantly reduced risk of transmitting HIV. However, the specific viral load threshold for U = U varies across different settings, making interpretation challenging. The article presents findings from a review of primary studies that found the incidence rate of HIV transmission decreased with ART use and a decrease in viral load. The risk of transmission became zero when the viral load was below 200 copies/mL, supporting the strategy of "Treatment as Prevention." Consistent condom use also lowered the rate of transmission.
