- Abstract
The article compares the objectives and approaches of four regional studies of marine biodiversity. It states that marine ecosystems provide a wide variety of services, including provision of food, regulation of climate, nutrient recycling, and cultural enrichment. It shows that the four studies focused mainly on a combination of composition and structure. It found there is a relative paucity of investigation on functional elements of biodiversity. It suggests that understanding the function of biodiversity is important to marine science and management as well as to society.
