- Abstract
Energy saving strategies and renewable energy are of paramount importance for the developing countries. This work introduces a design and fabrication of a low energy consumption light weight off-road vehicle to transport handicap students. TRIZ, which is the theory of inventive problem solving was integrated with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) schemes to generate the design concept of the off-road handicap vehicle. The ecofriendly light-weight solar driven car for handicap transportation was designed to enhance the green environment at the university campus utilizing the available renewable solar energy to reduce both the harmful emission and the operational cost. Several preliminary CAD steps were considered to achieve the desired design criteria including a light weight frame, the handicap needs, the safety requirements, and the customer satisfaction attributes. Various CAD steps were considered to draw the mechanical components and to optimize the dimensions of the frame using CATIA® v5 software. Static and dynamic analysis was performed for the 3-D frame structure model using ANSYS software® to determine the mechanical strains at various operational conditions. Flipping analysis was also considered in this study to enhance the reliability of the car. Moreover, the solar electrical system components were verified through a three-part driving mission including inclined planes and offroad environments. The reduction of the gross weight of the vehicle has led to energy saving, and the proper design of the suspension system resulted in better dynamic performance. Such a light frame solar driven vehicle can be very efficient for transporting handicap students in universities and similar closed campuses to enhance sustainable energy saving schemes in the developing countries.
