- Abstract
The article presents a study on tilapia Oreochromis niloticus juveniles in the Brazilian River Paraiba do Sul, which were associated with degraded habitats. It discusses that a species-specific molecular marker was used to allow unambigous identification of these small juveniles, which represent the most vulnerable life stage of both species. It is proposed that adaptation to degraded habitats is one of the characteristics of invasive species, and consequently habitat conservation and restoration may help to prevent fish invasions.
