Using Radio Telemetry to Assess Movement Patterns in a Giant Rhinoceros Beetle: Are There Differences Among Majors, Minors, and Females?

The article presents a study which examines the effectiveness of radio telemetry in monitoring movement patterns of the giant rhinoceros beetle Trypoxylus dichotomus. The study uses scanning receiver, Yagi antenna, and normal distribution and non-parametric tests to compare the distances traveled by major male, minor male and female giant rhinoceros beetles. Results show that radio telemetry suggests that T. dichotomus can travel less than 100 m between feeding and roost sites. Moreover, the findings reveal that minor males do not have more mating opportunities when they remain at their sap sites during the day.
