- Abstract
The article focuses on the use of maternal recollection in gaining birth weight data. It states that accessing birth certificates can be costly and run into legal issues. It mentions that mothers were interviewed in a clinical setting on their child's birth weight to determine if the mother's memory is accurate enough to rely on instead of birth certificates. It states that mothers from the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area in Minnesota were interviewed from several socioeconomic levels. It mentions that the mothers' recall was measured against weights on the birth certificates. It states that nearly 40 percent of mothers made no error and 90 percent of the differences were off by up to five ounces.
