- Abstract
Several methods are used for cation exchange capacity (CEC) measurements in soils, differing mainly in the pH of the determinations. The Mehlich method (In: BUZÁS, 1988) is generally used in Hungary (and in other parts of Europe), while in the USA the "salt extraction method" (GROVE et al., 1982) is more widespread. These two methods and a modified version of the Mehlich method (buffered at pH 10.3) were compared. Nineteen soil samples with different amounts and types of organic and inorganic soil colloids (humus and clay types) were collected and analysed for this project in order to prove the pH-dependency of the different methods and determine the correlation among the CEC determinations and the different clay and organic matter contents of the soils. In addition to the CEC measurements the following analyses were carried out on the samples: pH electrometrically (both in H2O and KCl solution), soil organic matter content by the Walkley-Black method, and particle size fractionation using the procedure described by Jackson. Depending on the protocols of the various methods, the CEC of the soil samples was analysed at pH 8.2, 10.3 and soil pH. The results exhibited great variability. The grade of differences showed further variation between the soils. The higher the colloidal (organic/ inorganic) content was, the greater the difference in the CEC levels and the higher the pH dependent charges of the colloids were, the greater the differences in the CEC of the same sample. Based on the studies it is suggested that harmonized but soil-dependent methods should be used to achieve compatible results in the literature.
