- Abstract
Objective: To examine the causes and demographic characteristics of the patients, admitted to Uludağ University Medical Faculty Emergency Department with rheumatologic diseases and rheumatic complaints. Methods: Demographic data of the patients were obtained by examining the electronic files of the emergency department, in the one year period between February 2012 and February 2013 . Results: Total 3600 patients that admitted to emergency internal medicine room, 33 female, 18 male total 51 patients (1.7%) were associated with rheumatic diseases. Eight patients (15.8%) were over 65 years. The most frequently observed five symptoms were joint pain, diffuse body pain, fatigue, dyspnea and fever. Diagnosis of the patients were; 16 (31.3%) rheumatoid arthritis, 5 (9.8%) Behçet's disease, 5 (9.8%) systemic lupus erythematosus, 6 (9.8%) vasculitis, 3 (5.8%) ankylosing spondylitis and 3 (5.8%) familial Mediterranian fever. Six patients were consulted with the symptoms of arthritis. The most common 5 reasons for consultation were rheumatologic disease activity, pneumonia, urinary infection, neutropenia and fever. Thirty-one (67.8%) patients in the emergency department were evaluated by the second department. The most common additional consultations were requested from infection (n=13, 42%) and respiratory disease departments (n=6, 19%). Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure or hyperlipidemia has been identified in 14 (27.4%) patients as the second chronic comorbid disease. Thirty-six (76%) patients were hospitalized and 15 (24%) patients were discharged. Exitus was observed in one patient during hospitalization. Conclusion: The incidence of rheumatic diseases that admitted to the emergency departments are less than the other internal medicine departments such as oncology, gastroenterology or nephrology. In recent years, with the recognition of rheumatic diseases and higher number of immunosuppressive therapies, rheumatic diseases are increasing in emergency departments. Infections and disease activity are the most common causes of admission. Hospitalization ratios are high in patients with rheumatic diseases from the emergency unit.
