- Abstract
Odontomas are the most common type of odontogenic tumors of the jaw. It comprises of 22% of all the odontogenic tumors. Odontomas arise from both odontogenic epithelium which produces enamel and odontogenic mesenchyme which produces dentin via odontoblast differentiation. Because they are composed of both cell types, they have previously been termed "Composite Odontomas". A case of a 19 year old female patient with compound odontoma in the anterior maxilla treated by surgical excision is presented. Treatment for an odontoma is complete removal with any associated soft tissues. Recurrences do not occur. Orthodontic treatment may be indicated to correct any malocclusion.
