- Abstract
Hearing loss, from the audiological point of view, represents any disturbance in the perception of sound, defined by the type (conductive or sensorineural), degree and audiometric configuration of hearing loss, uni- or bilateral impairment. Classically, hearing loss is classified in conductive, sensorineural and mixed. From the clinical point of view, conductive hearing loss involves the external or middle ear. In certain conditions the lesions are visible by otoscope/microscope, but questions arise when the tympanic membrane has no important modification. The pure tone audiogram is the gold standard to measure the hearing loss and to establish the type and audiometric configuration of hearing loss. When the tympanic membrane is normal, we need further tests to establish a correlation between the audiometric results and clinical changes. The acoustic immittance is an objective test which groups a number of measurements, such as tympanometry, acoustic reflex and volume equivalent, and assesses the state of the middle ear, of ossicular chain, improving the diagnosis accuracy and the therapeutic decision.
