- Abstract
The article "What do practicing general practitioners expect from academic general medicine?" deals with the expectations of practicing general practitioners regarding academic general medicine. It is noted that many publications in this field are only available in English and only partially address the practical aspects of general practitioner work. However, practicing general practitioners have numerous questions from their daily practice that they would like to see addressed scientifically. It is pointed out that the collaboration between universities and practices is mainly limited to the field of teaching. The article mentions various examples of research questions that are relevant to general practitioners but are often not adequately addressed. Six developments are identified that contribute to the neglect of general practitioner topics in universities and departments. These include the increasing leadership of departments by general practitioners with little practical/clinical experience, the high proportion of non-medical staff at universities, the focus of government third-party funding on social science health services research, and the changing identity of the field. The article deals with the development of general medicine and its impact on medical practice. It is noted that the introduction of evidence-based medicine (EBM) and guidelines has led to a narrowing of the field. This has resulted in general practitioners becoming more interchangeable in their role and the field increasingly focusing on one-dimensional rules and treatment goals. This also has implications for the identity of doctors and could lead to a reduction in tension between practitioners and researchers. It is emphasized that the generalist approach and patient orientation, which are typical of general medicine, could be lost.
