The article focuses on the competition among patient advocacy groups over distribution of government funding intended by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) for medical research in the U.S. Lobbyists were responsible for passing medical- and health-related laws in U.S. Congress, which included funding for specific disease research. This practice was criticized by Keith Yamamoto, vice chancellor for research at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
