- Abstract
The article discusses the role of human gastrointestinal microbiome, the collective genomes of the bacteria in the large intestine, in encoding numerous metabolic pathways responsible for normal metabolism. This implies the dependence of humans on these resident microbiota. The microbiome affects host metabolism and has been implicated in various diseases including obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular disease, and late-onset mutism.
