- Abstract
Inflammation in type 2 DM patients palys an important role in development of complications. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of inflammation in Korean type 2 DM patients. The subjects were recruited from a diabetes clinic in Seoul and classified into NCRP(normal CRP group, CRP<0.5mg/dl) and HCRP(high CRP group, CRP=0.5mg/dl) based on serum CRP levels. Waist circumference, BMI, and % body fat were significantly higher in HCRP than in NCRP. HCRP showed significantly higher serum concentrations of triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, c-peptide, insulin, and HbA1c and lower HDL-cholesterol than NCRP. Also, higher insulin resistance was seen in HCRP. HCRP showed significantly higher intakes of animal food and lower intakes of vegetables than NCRP. However, nutrient intakes were not different between 2 groups. In conclusion, obesity index(waist, BMI, % body fat), diabetes index(HbA1c, c-peptide, insulin), cardiovascular index(triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol) were significantly higher in HCRP than in NCRP. Consequently, type 2 DM patients with inflammation were more vulnerable to complications of diabetes. Therefore controlling mild chronic inflammation is important for type 2 DM patients and nutrient intakes may play a role in controlling inflammation.
