- Abstract
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), is taking the globe by storm, approaching 7,637,288 confirmed cases and over 424,758 deaths as of June 12, 2020. Although this highly contagious infection is mild or asymptomatic in 80% of cases, 3.5% mortality develops in cases requiring hospitalization. There is no specific treatment or vaccine yet. Mortality is generally not observed in the young population. Men, people over the age of 50, people with comorbidity such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, malignancy, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, kidney disease are sensitive groups for COVID-19. In countries where the population is old and do not be quick enough to take precautions, pandemic caused severe losses. Considering that hypertension and diabetes kidney disease increase with age, it is a natural result that the elderly and those with additional disease are affected more in the pandemic. Taking isolation precautions early for this group is very important in primary prevention. Taking the precautions early for the elderly group has an important role in improving the mortality results of our country so far.
