- Authors
JEELANI, MEHBOOB
- Abstract
The article looks at politics and the tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir, India, as of 2013. It notes that the Kashmir region is beautiful and was traditionally a major tourist destination in India, but that following the onset of armed rebellion in the late 1980s, tourism fell sharply. It discusses the ongoing dispute over control of Kashmir between India and Pakistan as well as the sectarian conflict between Muslims and Hindus in India. It profiles three men originally from Srinagar, Kashmir, working in the tourism industry, Amir Bashir, Yasir Iqbal, and Imran Jeelani. Topics include the actions of the Indian military in Kashmir and economic conditions in the state.
