- Abstract
Background Children with chronic pain are often referred to multiple specialists and therapists before finally being referred to our hospital's Children's Pain Management Clinic (CPMC). Since parents are the primary caregivers and play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with therapy and medication, the prognosis for these patients can depend significantly on their parents. Therefore, we wanted to explore what the parental expectations of our clinic were. Aim The aim of the study is to explore the expectations of parents with children who have chronic pain regarding their priorities in terms of knowledge acquisition and treatment options prior to their initial pain clinic interview. Method A questionnaire was given out to all parents whose children were referred to the clinic from October 2018 to October 2020. These were distributed to the accompanying parent in the waiting area, just prior to the initial interview. Results Parents of children with chronic pain reported that they wanted to know the cause of pain, ways to cope and the treatment options available. Treatment options such as pain medications, pain team support, and physiotherapy sessions were significantly rated as important. Conclusion Parents expect information about pain causes, coping strategies, treatment options, and support from the CPMC team. While psychological interventions are crucial, they are often undervalued by parents. Effective pain education and clear expectations are essential for successful chronic pain rehabilitation. Better adherence to treatment can enhance the overall effectiveness of care and the patient-clinic relationship, ultimately improving the patient's experience with pain management.
