- Title
Has Wal-Mart Buried Mom and Pop?
- Authors
Dean, Andrea M.; Sobel, Russell S.
- Abstract
The article examines the effect of Wal-Mart's entry into a market on small businesses. In the U.S. there is a notion that when Wal-Mart moves into a town, it will negatively affect small businesses in the area. Econometric estimation techniques were applied in analyzing the rate of self-employment and the number of small-employer establishments in areas where the chain has entered the market. The authors conclude that there is no statistically significant impact on the overall size of the small business sector in the U.S.
