- Title
SOME ERRORS AND OMISSIONS IN THE INDEXES TO JANE AUSTEN'S LETTERS.
- Authors
Vick, Robin
- Abstract
The article focuses on the identities of a number of persons mentioned in novelist Jane Austen's letters who are accorded no more than a name in Index II of R.W. Chapman's edition of "Jane Austen's Letters." A Index suggests that Nanny was perhaps Nanny Littlewart, but "Nanny" and "Nanny Littlewart," are clearly distinct in the letter of 25 November 1798. The note to another letter avers that Hastings was no doubt Warren Hastings' but it is inconceivable that Jane would have referred to Warren Hastings in the familiar style she reserved for young male acquaintances.
