- Authors
Jansohn, Christa
- Abstract
The article reports on novelist D.H. Lawrence's admiration of French literature and frequent quotes from it in his books. There are numerous examples of Lawrence's use of French literature most of which have been identified, with the only exception of the "Book of French Verse. In Lawrence's "A Modern Lover, the manes of Balzac and Maupassant are mentioned and later on in the story there is an allusion to Charles-Pierre Baudelaire's poem "Madrigal Triste." Lawrence's reference to the "Book of French Verse" in the play rather suggests an anthology of French poetry than a separate edition of Baudelaire.
